About FBC

FBC is a not-for-profit community organisation established in 1995 by families who were grateful to receive birth centre care at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.  FBC has now grown to encompass the other birth centres across Queensland: Gold Coast, Mackay and Townsville.

Aims

It is the position of FBC that birth is a normal, natural and safe process, and that birth with a known midwife in a comfortable setting offers the best outcomes for mother, baby and family. Further, FBC believe that this model of care is undervalued and undersupplied in Australian maternity services. As a consequence, FBC aims to:

* Promote and support birth centres and other midwifery-based models of care
* Support and encourage birth options
* Empower women to trust their ability to birth and mother
* Support mothers and families
* Support midwives and other health practitioners who respect a woman’s childbirth choices
* Encourage establishment of and support community services and facilities
* Value and encourage wider community education
* Act as consumer representatives for safe birthing options.

Activities

FBC actively lobby to improve childbirth options for Queensland families. They also contribute by:

* Purchasing furniture, books, videos, pictures and birthing equipment for the Birth Centre
* Offering financial support for the ongoing professional development of Birth Centre midwives
* Organising community events and providing a network of support for new families.
