Mums cry with joy after Premier’s visit and promise of a Birth Centre
Today the Premier of QLD, Anna Bligh, announced ALP’s commitment to fund a $1 million Birth Centre for families in Toowoomba.
Maternity Coalition, a national consumer advocacy group for maternity services, has been campaigning for a long time to improve the pregnancy, birth and post-natal care available to QLD’s families.
Maternity Coalition Darling Downs branch co-president, Makayla McIntosh, mother of two, said:
“Birthing your baby is one of the most important times of a woman’s life and new mothers and babies need to be well supported and cared for, not only by their midwives but by the community as a whole.
“The Premier of QLD, Anna Bligh, acknowledged how important birth was to women yesterday here in Toowoomba and today she’s followed through with this important commitment.
“Today’s Birth Centre announcement has brought tears of joy to many mums in Toowoomba who have longed campaigned for a Birth Centre for local families.
“When you get care in a Birth Centre you get to know the same midwife for all of your pregnancy appointments, she is with you when you are in labour in a home-like environment at the hospital, and she also provides you with excellent post-natal care.
“Women in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Mackay and Townsville have access to a Birth Centre and we’re so happy that hopefully soon, Toowoomba women will join the list of fortunate mums across the state.”
