What is a Birth Centre?
The model of care emphasises that birth is a normal and natural process, and that women and families should be supported and empowered during this significant life event.
The Birth Centre aims to achieve a home-like atmosphere within a secure hospital environment, typically with more options during labor, food/drink, music and non-institutional furniture (e.g., double beds, couches).
A Birth Centre promotes:
* the woman's involvement in the decision making process
* freedom of movement during labour and birth
* use of natural methods of pain management such as water and massage
* free interaction with chosen support people, which may include family, children, friends or doulas.
* family centred care, including active participation of partners and immediate integration of baby into the family (ie, "rooming in").
* breastfeeding, with midwives who are qualified lactation consultants available for consultation during the six week post natal period
If medical intervention is deemed necessary, the midwife accompanies the woman to the Birth Suite or Theatre.
